What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that cover teeth. They protect and strengthen teeth and improve their appearance. A crown may be right for you if you have a severely chipped or damaged tooth.

Dental crowns can:

  • Protect weak teeth from decay.
  • Repair a broken tooth.
  • Restore a worn-down tooth.
  • Hold together pieces of a cracked tooth.
  • Improve the appearance and strengthen a tooth with a large filling.
  • Cover poor shape.
  • Cover discoloration.

These benefits can help restore a tooth and preserve the overall health of your mouth.

No matter your needs, we want your dental visit to be as convenient and comfortable as possible, so schedule an appointment for your whole family at our office today!

What Happens When I Get a Dental Crown?

You’ve decided to use dental crowns to restore your beautiful smile. What comes next?

  • Your dentist will examine the tooth that needs the crown. Once they know what is required, they can prepare it for the crown.
  • They will then make room by reshaping the tooth. If the tooth is too worn down, your dentist may build the tooth up before placing the crown.
  • An impression of your tooth will be taken, and the lab will create your custom crown.
  • In 2-3 weeks, the custom crown will be ready! Just return to the office, and your cosmetic dentist will cement the crown into place.

Why Should I Get Crowns?

A tooth with serious damage will continue to decay unless you take corrective action. Dental crowns allow us to avoid extracting a damaged tooth, which can be painful and require a lengthy healing time. We also want to protect the root of the tooth.

Dental crowns are strong and fit into place easily. Dental crowns need routine brushing and flossing to remain strong and healthy.

If you chew hard foods such as ice or candies, there is a risk of breaking the dental crown and your other teeth. When you get a dental crown, we will discuss food options with you. Most patients can enjoy almost all the foods they usually eat with dental crowns.

Types of Crowns

There are four types of dental crowns used to repair or replace a tooth:

  • Ceramic — A ceramic crown blends in with the rest of your teeth. It is often used for front teeth for a more natural look.
  • Porcelain fused to metal — A porcelain fused to metal crown has a strong bond to the root of a tooth and is often preferred by patients who need new dental crowns.
  • Gold alloys — A gold alloy contains copper, gold, and other metals to create a strong bond with the tooth. Some people prefer gold because it does not fracture or wear away the tooth.
  • Base metal alloys — These are made from non-noble metals. They are resistant to corrosion and are used for patients needing a strong crown.

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a great solution for multiple missing teeth. They fill the holes with multiple dental crowns that sit on top of the gums and function like your natural teeth. Dental bridges need healthy teeth next to the gap to support the bridge.

Dental bridges are a common solution if you have more than one missing tooth. Not only are they easy for us to create, but they also help patients avoid dental implants, which can be a more expensive solution.

Dental bridges are a great solution if you have more than one missing tooth!

Dental bridges are great for people with multiple missing teeth and can also solve these problems:

  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Teeth shifting out of place and becoming crooked.
  • Further tooth loss.
  • Deterioration of the jawbone.

We are ready to help you replace your teeth with a dental bridge.

What Happens When I Get a Dental Bridge?

Getting a bridge is a lot like getting a crown. Our dentists will first examine your mouth. We will ensure that the natural teeth around the gap are strong enough to hold the bridge.

Next, we will use X-rays and impressions to create the perfect dental bridge. Once the crowns and bridge are made, we will contact you to place them. At your final visit, your dentist will cement the crowns and bridge into place. You can enjoy a complete and functional smile with your new dental bridge.

Why Should I Get Dental Bridges?

Missing teeth will lead to several oral health problems. If a tooth is not replaced after extraction or loss, the other teeth in the mouth will begin to shift and move in their place. Dental bridges hold the teeth correctly, preventing shifting and other issues.

Another issue we find with missing teeth is the deterioration of the bone. Replacing a single tooth with a dental bridge can work, but several teeth needing replacement could cause the jawbone to deteriorate.

In most cases, dental bridges require another tooth or two teeth to support them. These teeth are often crowned to provide support for the bridge. We create the replacement teeth supported by the bridge using porcelain. Depending on your needs, we can also use gold and other metals.

We offer dental bridges to patients who have more than one missing tooth but don’t want to get dental implants. Dental bridges can last a while, but depending on your oral health and any wear and tear from chewing, they may need to be replaced in 10 years.

“Thanks to Dr. Pieper and Dr. Gerard, I can now look in the mirror and love myself again. They not only help you get a pretty smile again, but they also help give you the confidence you should have always had.”

Types of Dental Bridges

There are three basic types of dental bridges used to fix multiple missing teeth:

  • Traditional bridges – The most common type of dental bridge involves using two teeth to support the bridge. They need routine brushing and flossing to prevent decay.
  • Cantilever bridge – We use this bridge when you have adjacent teeth on one side of your missing tooth. We do not recommend this option for molar replacement as the back of the mouth tends to have more force placed upon the teeth when chewing.
  • Bonded bridge – A bonded bridge improves the teeth and gums when you have a metal or porcelain framework to support the replacement tooth.

Missing teeth make it difficult to chew, speak, and smile. Contact Millennium Family Dental today if you need teeth replaced and want to restore your smile with a dental bridge!
